BYOC--bring your own container {greentainer giveaway!}

*this contest is now closed.  congrats to comment #8, Em--you are the winner!*

carrying around reusable water bottles and coffee mugs is pretty second nature, but in the past year, jim and i have stepped it up a notch.  i have a cloth napkin and reusable tableware stashed in my purse, and jim brings his own container if we treat ourselves to take-out dessert from a local restaurant.

(cheesecake or tiramisu is a delicious and much cheaper indulgence than dinner out!)

i've become increasingly wary of plastic.  we're using more and more pyrex (which you can find affordably at secondhand shops), but they don't always have lids, and glass is not always ideal for meals away from home.

enter greentainer and their stainless steel portables.

greentainer sent me a large round container with clips and their smaller snack set.  they are meant for solid foods--so no soup--but i've packed yogurt with great luck.  the ones with clips are easy for little hands to use, and greentainers without clips close a little tighter.

this one holds 20 ounces and has a little tray, giving it a second level and adding to its storage capabilities.  with a 5.5 inch diameter, the large is not truly all that large, but it is more than adequately sized for a sandwich and a side.
the snack set is ideal for veggies and dip.  the compact container holds 7 ounces (with a 4.7 in diameter) and the smaller one, which fits inside, holds 2 ounces.  i have the little one in my diaper bag now for cheerios on-the-go.

i love that i don't need to worry about glass breaking or plastic leaching.  one downside would be that you couldn't microwave in them, but i try not to microwave in plastic anyway, so that's no different.  you could always bring your leftovers to work in the greentainer and transfer it to a plate to microwave, which is more civilized anyway:)

i am very pleased with my greentainers.  they are safe, easy to clean, and fairly made in india.  i love learning about plastic-free ways to reduce waste, especially since food on-the-go can generate so much waste if we aren't mindful.

if you'd like to order your own, greentainer is offering a free shipping code (SOMUCHREVIEW10)  through 12/6.  their shipping is exceptionally fast, and they take care to package with minimal waste.

greentainer is also offering one greentainer--winner's choice--as a giveaway to a lucky {so much reviews} reader. For a chance to win, just leave one comment saying how you are reducing waste in your household with a way to get in touch (if you're not a blogger.)

that's it.  if you want to follow this blog, subscribe, or follow me on twitter, i'd be more than happy to keep you in the loop for giveaways, coupon codes, and green reviews, but it's not compulsory for entries;)

good luck!  (winner will be chosen by random.org on friday november 26.)

We have successfully stopped using paper napkins by loading up on {gorgeous} cloth napkins. We are working on switching from paper towels now too. One thing I find to really help is to be sure you have plenty on hand so that you don't have the excuse of no more clean napkins or towels for grabbing one of the papers ones you have stashed somewhere!
Thanks for the giveaway!

Hmmmm... I have given up on using a toaster, microwave, electric coffee pot, television, etc. The only things that run on electricity in my house are the radio and the lights! I bring my own bags EVERYWHERE and try to walk or ride my bike wherever I go. I think that is about it! Much love! Megan.

We switched out all of our plastic storage containers for lidded pyrex a couple of years ago, but, you're right, glass isn't always the best traveling option. I think these metal containers would be especially great for taking along food for roadtrips.

Thanks for the great giveaway!

I totally saw the Greentainer in action just the other day! Seriously dudes, the thing is so sweet. And green. All things that I love.

Oooh, we? Rinse out, remove label and reuse all the glass jars we buy (and make it a point to buy over plastic) to store prepped veggies, leftovers, and lunches.

It's like a bento box! Only sleeker. I am serious when I say I'd like to gift my husband with this. It would make one part of his life that much easier, and since it's so cute - it would be more fun to pack for him. Everyone wins right there, friends.

Suzannah, thanks for posting! :) These containers look pretty sweet. I still remember Jim yelling at me for using styrofoam at Ligonier... at the time I didn't really get it. He was a bit ahead of his time.

I am still early on in changing to more green ways, but I try to take my trusty travel coffee mug everyday. Also, my housemates and I are recycling fiends! Here in Philly we recycle #s 1-7, paper, glass, aluminum, and cardboard.

Also, do you have any suggestions for where to buy cloth napkins and paper towel substitutes? Thanks!

I loved your post on "How to win"...but I enter contests all the time and never win. Oh well. This container is really cool!
We also use cloth napkins and even take them on the road. We still use plastic containers to take food on the road. We re-use them over and over and make sure they are BPA free...but I'd love to move away from plastic all together.

We compost, use cloth napkins, carpool, and generally try to live with less. It's surprisingly easy once you get started.

I'm trying to phase us out of plastic, though right now we seem to be drowning in it.
But I have been simply re-using all of the jelly and pasta sauce jars. I may just have to remove all the plastic from the house when I take all of our pans to Goodwill. We're going to cast iron and glass for pots and pans and getting rid of the nonstick.

I've just about stopped using my clothes dryer. My husband's granddad loves to build things and made us a super-deluxe clothes drying rack. I can fit at least two loads of clothes on it and it folds up (still a large cumbersome thing but I leave it in one spot).

I love the greentainer! We travel with lunch and snakcs with our two kids so it would be very handy!

This is something we're definitely working on. We reuse glass jars for most things, but some things don't fit in them, like sandwiches! We use cloth rags and napkins. We're working on more things!

Cool container. I am working to be more green at home. So far, I use insulated cups for water at work and home and cloth bags for groceries and lunches. Thanks for offering the giveaway! kcopeland @ gmail dot com

I'm not sure if it's too late but I wanted to submit an entry anyway. :-)

I am currently switching us from plastic to glass storage containers. I am hoping to switch us to a paperless kitchen for lent but that will depend on how Noah is sleeping. :-)

I'm not very green. I have to say. But we do recycle and I just bought a starbucks coffee travel cup so now I make my own and use that to save money and I guess as a result I don't buy starbucks and that's less disposable cups which is green right?
